All About You: Overcoming Our Fears

Well, the New Year is underway and if you're like me you are trying to stick to your resolution of getting fit and sticking to an exercise routine. Staying active and fit are an essential part of living your fullest, most glamorous life and, although I love to walk, I have to admit I am a fair weather walker. As we all know, if we don’t enjoy an activity we won’t do it, so I needed to do something besides walking only on mild, sunny days.

This past year I started looking around for a dance class that I could take when the weather was too bad to venture outside. Once upon a time, I was actually a ballet and jazz dancer, and I loved it, but that was many moons ago, and I hadn't danced in a long time. I missed it though and had checked out a few dance classes over the years but I just never found the one that worked for me. Now, there is a charming little dance studio very near to my house and I decided to call and see if they offered adult dance classes. I just never called to check before because it had been so long since I last danced that I felt sort of nervous about if I could do it again. I finally called and found out, to my great delight, that they do! After being assured that there were actually adult women in the class my age, (and not just 18-20 year old adults!) with kids, and bodies, I signed up.

As I headed to class I was really nervous because it has been so long since I put on a leotard (gasp!) and taken a class. I really wanted to get back into dancing again for fun and exercise so I just had to make myself do it. I really had to overcome my fear. I am not even sure what I was afraid of. I guess, not being able to do it, looking bad, making a fool of myself. I don't know, all of the above. I was relieved when I got there to see that everyone there was around my age. They were all so nice and welcomed me and we are just there having fun reconnecting to our love of dance. I will admit it is difficult to move for the next couple of days, but it’s worth it!

I am so glad that I did not let my fear keep me from trying something that I wanted to do. It has before, and it's no way to go through life. And it certainly is not living glamorously.

And so as we begin another new year, I am going to keep in mind the lessons learned from last year and remember to apply them to the days and months ahead as I venture into other unknown territories. I guess my point is to think about what you would really enjoy and check around to see where you might can join in a class or group. This is such an important part of living a glamorous life; trying something new or re-connecting to something you love, meeting new people, and most importantly, overcoming your fears.

So I hope I have maybe inspired you to break that barrier of fear you might have and get up the courage to try something you have been interested in. It will make you feel so good to know that you are living your life the way you want to. It's all about living glamorously at every age, every day. So good luck, don’t give up on your goals, and have fun!

Do you have any similar stories of making yourself do something that you really wanted to do but you were too scared to do it? If so, I would love to hear from you and maybe you could share some tips that worked for you in overcoming your fears. Thanks so much, LA
