Go Green for Halloween!
Visit www.TerraCycle.net for neat ways to reuse candy wrappers and benefit your favorite non-profits.
I know my son would never forgive me if I didn’t let him help carve the jack o’lantern, play at the local carnival and go trick-or-treating. However, always trying to stay conscious of little things I can do to put his health, safety and the safety of our planet first, I came up with a few tips on how to make Halloween more green, without scaring away any of the fun of the orange and black:
Reduce
Instead of driving to other neighborhoods for trick-or-treating fun, stay close to home and walk around from street to street or maybe host a family friendly block party. If you have to travel out for a party or night on the town, consider public transportation or carpooling. This will reduce fuel consumption and carbon emissions.
Reuse
When you’ve got little witches, fairies and ghosts wanting more candy than their hands can hold, consider more eco-friendly (and durable) container options. Try using an old pillowcase, or canvas or cloth shopping bag; also, if you have any of those plastic pumpkins around from years past, you might as well put them to good use. These days you can even design your own reusable Halloween bags on sites like Zazzle or CafePress.
Recycle
Yes, we’ve all heard it before, reduce, reuse, RECYCLE, but what I’m talking about is upcycling all those candy wrappers. Up until recently, most candy wrappers haven’t been recyclable…. however, some of them are now.
Organic Candy
I am pretty picky about food in general, and because I have a big sweet tooth to satisfy, I’m usually not inclined to buy ‘unknown’ healthy candy (I know, terrible… lol). I went to find some familiar brands that were more natural or organic and here’s what I found:
All-Natural Jelly Belly Superfruit Mix
Mary Jane by Necco
Glee Gum
Dagoba Organic
