Is it Summer Yet?
Friends of Hunting Island
It wasn't just another day at Hunting Island beach with my family. It was a brisk January morning, the first one of the year. The day held promise of air temperatures in the 60s, but the water barely reached 40 degrees. Through the fog, I watched the sea foam crash land on the shore and curdle into frosty ringlets. As I wondered whether I was ready to bear the chill, my children laughed and remained undaunted along with 300 other thrill seekers ready to dive in and take the Pelican Plunge.
We gathered to not only to enjoy the park but to also help it. In this annual fundraising event held by the Friends of Hunting Island State Park (FOHI) and the Hunting Island State Park, the participants collect pledges and donations, and receive a sticker declaring, “I took the plunge!” Proceeds benefit the Discover Carolina school program, which offers students hands-on educational field trips. The 2011 event raised more than $3,200.
Inspired by polar bear plunges throughout the United States, park manager Jeff Atkins approached FOHI about creating a version for Beaufort, S.C. Beginning three years ago with only 100 participants, the event has grown to attract 600 and now includes more activities, such as musical entertainment and a costume parade. Hunting Island is possibly the only place where Evel Knievel can be spotted along the shoreline carrying a shirtless toddler and being chased by hula dancers.
“Best thing about it is, we take a fun event like this and get to make a difference in children’s lives by using these funds to bring them out to the park and teach them about this special place,” says Atkins, who led the charge to the water.
The Atlantic waves greeted us with sharp, icy slaps. Just as quickly as we rushed in, we retreated in pandemonium. Tumbling back onto shore, my husband P.J. and I quickly wrapped the kids and ourselves in towels. We staggered back to the hut, where volunteers placed cups of hot cocoa in our numb hands.
The experience was definitely invigorating. But I'm glad summer is just around the corner.
