Veggie Love

Meet Jan Bass
Occupation: Social Worker
She's Wild About: Swordfish

How long have you been a vegetarian?
I have been a vegetarian since the age of 8; it was not a religious choice, rather I did not care for meat.

Other than meat, is there anything else you don't care to eat?
I don't eat poultry.

What made you want to be vegetarian?
Eating healthy was my main reason. Being heart smart is important to me. Cardiac complications run strong in my family.

Is your husband/family also a vegetarian? If no, how does that affect mealtimes?
No one else in the family is a vegetarian. I have to shop and make two separate but healthy meals every night.

What's your favorite healthy food and why?
I love swordfish done every way. Grilled, blackened --does not matter as long as you can cut it with a spoon.

Any advice for people considering switching to a vegetarian lifestyle?
Learn your protein, vitamin, calcium, etc., needs. When first starting out, make sure you make a shopping list with a meal plan so you ensure you are eating healthy and not falling short on any essential nutrients. Experiment, too. There may be certain foods that you may not think you will like until you try them. After all, even though the word tofu does not sound appealing, it is in the trick of how you prepare it.

What is your favorite way to eat tofu?
Someone else cooking it.

If you were stranded on a desert island and you could have an unlimited supply of three things for the rest of your life, what would you want?
Swordfish, Mich Ultra, cheese, chocolate ice cream...not necessarily in that order.

Jan Trivedi Bass, LCSW has worked at Rome Hospital for over 10 years. Bass graduated from New Hartford High School in Upstate New York. She attended Nazareth College of Rochester where she received her Bachelors in Social Work. Bass continued to get her Masters in Social Work at SUNY Albany. Currently finished running first half marathon and working towards her second. Enjoys running for health benefits but mainly for stress relief. Prefers to run races with a benefit such as Heart Run, but Utica boilermaker definitely the most fun. Enjoy Bud 55, Mich Ultra, and on those daring days a Chiraz - if in the mood for dry, or Reisling - if mood for sweet.
