Mountains of the Moon
Mountains of the Moon (www.mountainsofthemoon.com), a Chicago-based sustainable fashion label, is the brainchild of Melissa Baswell, an artist and designer who began creating clothing for dolls at age 5. After spending her college years at University of Wisconsin-Madison as an intern with an environmental education program, she traveled the country researching sustainable fabrics and fair, U.S.-based manufacturing. Enter Mountains of the Moon, born out of Baswell’s mission to create eco-friendly clothing that was also fashion forward.
Mountains of the Moon goes beyond the traditional eco-fashion company by blending fine art, style, ethics, and environmental and social responsibility/awareness. All garments are made from sustainable fabrics, like organic cotton and hemp blends, and are dyed using low impact dyes that are less harmful. Their collections are also designed, patterned, manufactured, dyed and tagged in the USA in small, 100% sweatshop-free facilities that are family owned and operated. They also focus on creating designs that are wearable for multiple seasons and therefore less likely to end up in landfills.
In addition to their commitment to sustainability through fashion, Mountains of the Moon makes regular donations to American Forests, Carbon Fund, Oxfam, Conscious Alliance, the International Tibet Independence Movement, the Red Door Animal Shelter, the Organic School Project, and others. They also participate in events like Green Apple and organize benefits with non-profits like Climate Cycle, where they work to raise awareness of environmental issues and responsible design by giving guests the opportunity to learn while enjoying fashion and art.
(Above right) The Audrey Dress and Taylor Pants
Flattering on every body type, the Audrey wrap dress features a soft 55% hemp, 45% organic cotton knit fabric. This stunning knee-length dress sets itself apart from traditional wrap dresses with a unique (and much more comfortable) pull-over design that includes a sexy mock wrap top. Three quarter-length sleeves, four side ties, and a stylish uneven hem with a merrowed finish create a look that is straight off the runway. Mountains of the Moon’s best-selling Taylor Pants marry comfort with style through clean lines and class detailing. Made from luxurious 55% hemp, 45% Tencel fabric, they breathe with the skin and can be worn year round.

The Coco Dress
Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn (with a twist of right now modern) in this eco-chic day-to-night gown. The Coco dress includes a fitted top with darts (lined with the same fabric), an invisible back zipper, and romantically spinny circle skirt bottom. Wear it alone with flats by day, then throw on the elegant printed sash and heels for night. Luxurious 55% hemp, 45% Tencel woven fabric in black and periwinkle is perfect
for fall, winter and holiday.

Great Article, Mountains of the Moon and it's Chief Designer Mellisa Baswell, put Chicago on the map for Eco-Fashion. When I look at her work, I not only see "Eco-Friendly clothing", I see a woman with conviction, passion and believe. Her clothing to me is a reflection of the beauty and passion, of her heart and true beautiful nature.
Thanks
