Metal for Mettle

KIZZ Designs

Crystal Kneller of British Columbia, Canada, is an indie jewelry artisan inspired by the metal and stone born of the earth. Her craftsmanship is bold, yet simple, in order to showcase the materials she uses.  Kneller strings all types of beads and semi-precious stones on wire or stretch cord, with findings of gold- fill, vermeil, sterling silver or brass, and every piece is different from the next.

This month, Sashay Magazine features Kneller's handcrafted breast cancer awareness ribbons. "I make these ribbons from personal inspiration," she says on her website.

"I battled breast cancer in 2007 and won. I want to contribute to finding the cure for this disease that takes so many young women." For every piece of awareness jewelry she designs and sells, Kneller makes a donation to the Canadian Cancer Society.

For Kneller, these brass, copper and silver bracelets, adorned with deep pink gems and pink ribbon-twisted charms, represent hope. "When I was diagnosed, a friend of mine gave me a stone with the word "believe" carved on it. She gave it to me to carry and told me to always believe and you will stay strong. So I did."

"I carried it. I believed. I stayed strong."
