Donna Rosser, The Barefoot Photographer.

In March, we asked our pet-lover fans to submit their best photos of their furry, feathery and scaly companions. We received images--many of them very endearing and in some cases quite comical--from Sashayers from Oregon to Florida. Below are the top six winning photos, the submitters of which will receive a special gift in the mail from Sashay Magazine. The submitters of the top three will in addition receive publication of their winning photo in our Spring print issue, available for purchase now at www.sashaymagazine.com. Below our winners, we've also posted some honorable mentions. So check and see if your pet won! We hope you enjoy this photo spread celebrating the animals that add so much joy to our lives.

Second Place, Best Expression: Photo chosen because it illustrates the epitome of canine alertness, personality and loyalty. Submitted by Darcy Gray, a volunteer with the Olympic Animal Sanctuary (www.olympicanimalsanctuary.org), a nonprofit animal welfare and rescue organization specializing in the care of non-adoptable dogs: fighting dogs, street dogs, feral dogs, wolf-dogs and coyote hybrids, dogs that have killed other animals or bitten people. At Olympic Animal Sanctuary, these dogs learn to get along with humans and each other, and they never have to live in fear again.

Third Place, Most Evocative (at left): Photo chosen for the story that this image tells about the human-animal bond. This one tugged on our heartstrings. Submitted by Darcy Gray.

Fourth Place, Most Candid (right): Talk about getting your hand caught in the cookie jar...or your whiskers in the icing. Photo also selected for richness of color and digital quality. Submitted by Deborah Leigh. Name of Cat: Kipling, 3-year-old orange tabby.

Fifth Place, Most Artistic (right): Makes you wonder, "What are they looking at?" So nonchalant, yet so intense. Typical cats for you. We also love the perspective and the angle. Submitted by Kate Staley.

Sixth Place, Most Adorably Original (right): We hope the waves won't swallow this tiny pooch; guess that's what the life jacket's for. This photo of Skyler, the tea cup Shih Tzu, was submitted by Tabitha Lynn.

Honorable Mentions

Distracted Driving In the Style of a True Pet Lover (far left): Love your enthusiasm, but do be careful! Photo of Klutch submitted by Tiffany Marlow.   A Dog's Life (left): We're not psychologists, but we're thinking Zolo here is type B.

Most Unlikely Friends (right): An endearing moment between two very different creatures. Submitted by Kerri Bolen of Williston, SC.

Portraiture at its Finest (right): In ancient civilizations, portraiture was reserved for the members of the ruling elite, priests, warriors and even distinguished artisans. MaryJane and Sophie must have quite the clout and respect among their human family members to have such refined art created with them as subjects. We love it!

Puppy Love (right): You can almost feel how soft this Wheaten puppy is just by looking at the photo submitted by Shannon Bollinger of www.puppydogsbydesign.com.

A Dashing Early Riser (right): Mr. Roo's feathers are quite sleek. It's not easy looking good in the morning. Guess some people just have it in their genes to wake up fresh and beautiful. Submitted by Donna Hentsch.
