An Eco Education

With school days upon us, many moms are faced with buying supplies for our children. For me, some of the tough choices came from the list of supplies the school is requesting, including; named brand crayons and glue that aren't as healthy as their soy or more organic counterparts. Unfortunately, if I send my personal product choices to school with my son, I've been told they'll just be sent home. However, rather than fretting over things out of my control, I am choosing to focus on things I can, like lunch boxes and backpacks.

Like most children, my son wants to feel like he's got the 'cool' goods, sustainable or not. So, I was really happy to find this alien lap top lunch pack from Lap Top Lunches. Made with 100% post-consumer recycled fabric, this lunch pack is phthalate, BPA, lead and PVC free-- plus it has cool aliens on it, perfect for my first grader. As for the backpack, there was a bit of a compromise, as I thought the Big Eco Backpack with the Peace sign was cool. The 6-year-old, however, was not so sure until I explained what it stood for. Then he was game.

Choosing to live sustainably isn't always easy. You have to learn to pick and choose your battles and educate through example. Hopefully, by sending my son to school with sustainable supplies that are within my control, educators and those who make decisions will be influenced to opening the doors to more earth friendly products that will help sustain the planet for the future generations they are educating.
